It’s Over

flushed, but glowing
the concrete numbed my toes
my dew ridden skin
alive and raw - one last time

inside your gaze
'it's over', you said
to the useless apple trees
I laughed, spinning

from what never began.
our secret hearts
only talk
in the early hours

where lives, not lived
were created
or destroyed
for our pleasure

where love was
the salt of your neck
the rise and fall
of bodies expressing

everything that never began
a love, a life, a partner, a friend
memories now
of everything that never began.

'It's over', he said.
