A group of friends an myself saw an advertisement to rent a barge and and enjoy the Irish countryside and waterways. It promised to be peaceful and serene. Knowing nothing about boats, barges, waterways or navigating them in general we decided to rent a barge and fill it with copious amounts of beer and spirits. It was a particularly warm day in July and our drink was getting warm. We decided to stop at the next barge port with a pub. I got off the barge a bit tipsy walked two miles to the pub and with my fresh off the boat American accent I said:
‘Hi, can I buy some ice?’
‘It’s not in season,’ the bar man replied.
‘Oh, okay, thanks anyway’ I said and left.
